The Every Student Succeeds Act

On December 10, 2015, President Obama signed the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) into law. ESSA replaces No Child Left Behind and includes language regarding “effective school library programs.”

There are provisions in the law that directly impact school libraries and school librarians. For an overview please see here.

The following provisions in ESSA specifically address school libraries and school librarians:

All states are required to submit a plan to the US Department of Education that outlines and details the ways that they will enact the law. Montana’s ESSA information is located at located here.

MLA has been working very hard to ensure that the state plan includes school librarians as they implement ESSA here in Montana. An SLMD Steering Committee is working with John Chrastka, Executive Director of the nonprofit political action committee EveryLibrary. Thanks to a contribution from Roger Rosen, EveryLibrary is providing MLA with pro bono support in this endeavor.

MLA has submitted letters to Superintendent Juneau during the state plan development process and during the public commenting period (November 17-December 16, 2016).

MLA now needs YOUR help in this process. Please read the draft plan and complete the comment form no later than 5:00 PM on Friday, December 16, 2016. Watch this site for regular updates.
