Who Was Sheila Cates and Why Was She Important
How many of you remember Sheila Cates—the magnificent librarian in whose name the MLA Sheila Cates Scholarship Committee raises money each year?* Many people new to the association never knew Sheila. Accordingly, the Cates Committee has a video project in the works that will highlight the importance of Sheila to the Montana library profession and illustrate why we raise money each year in her name. We’ll also be taking a crazy trip down memory lane, as we look back at some of those wacky fundraising events we hold each year to help raise scholarship funds!
On that note, if you have any photos of Cates events at conference, either this year or from past years, please(we implore you) e-mail them to email@example.com or snail mail them to Lisa Mecklenberg Jackson, 120 Southridge Dr., Missoula, MT 59803 so they can be used for this video project!
Thank you so much to all those new and seasoned who work to support the work of the MLA Sheila Cates Committee!
*Sheila Cates served as Library Development Coordinator at the Montana State Library from 1985 until her death from cancer in 1993. Sheila, whose energy, kindness, and ingenuity made an impact on so many Montana librarians, was named Montana Library Association’s Librarian of the Year in 1993. In 1984, the Montana Library Association established the Sheila Cates Scholarship to provide financial support to association members seeking education in the library science field.
