Mission and Goals

MISSION

The mission of the Montana Library Association is to develop, promote, and improve library and information services and the profession of librarianship in order to enhance learning and ensure access to information for all.

GOALS

The Association affirms the following goals to benefit our members, to bring about change in the environment in which libraries operate, and to strengthen the operation of the Association.

  1. IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIBRARY SERVICES AND COLLECTIONS
    Includes: improving access to information; facilitating resource and information sharing; encouraging high quality curricula in academic, professional development, and continuing education programs; participating in efforts to promote the free flow of information in all formats; and playing a role in the preservation of resources and information.
  1. SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
    Includes: providing continuing education programs at annual conferences, as well as at other times and locations and in innovative formats; awarding grants and scholarships to members for continuing education; fostering member involvement in personal networking and mentoring opportunities; recruiting qualified individuals into librarianship; and encouraging librarians to remain in the profession.
  1. ENHANCE THE STATURE OF MONTANA LIBRARIES AND LIBRARIANS
    Includes: promoting the services, products and activities of libraries and librarians by means of a strong public relations program; developing and maintaining relationships with regional and national library associations and related organizations; and increasing salary levels commensurate with training and experience.
  1. DEVELOP ASSOCIATION LEADERS
    Includes: fostering members’ commitment to the Association and its goals; and providing programs to develop members’ leadership skills.
  1. INFLUENCE STATE/NATIONAL INFORMATION POLICIES AND LEGISLATIVE ISSUES
    Includes: maintaining an effective government relations program which encourages members to speak out on library issues; and increasing members’ awareness of information policy issues.
  1. MAINTAIN AN ONGOING STRATEGIC AND FINANCIAL PLANNING PROCESS FOR THE ASSOCIATION
    Includes: instituting a continuous strategic planning process; improving the budgeting and financial reporting process; and meeting the Association’s financial requirements.
  1. PURSUE MEMBERSHIP GROWTH
    Includes: retaining existing members; and recruiting new members.
